The 2024 Pasadena Homeless Count uncovered a significant rise in the number of people experiencing homelessness who are fleeing domestic violence, alongside a growing number of individuals falling into homelessness for the first time. These trends emerged from the just-released 2024 Homeless Count statistics.

According to the count data, the number of people experiencing homelessness as a result of fleeing domestic violence has more than doubled since pre-pandemic levels, rising from 68 in 2020 to 130 in 2023, and reaching 143 in 2024. This increase highlights the challenges faced by survivors in accessing alternative housing.

Simultaneously, the number of first-time homeless has been growing since the end of pandemic-era protections and supports.

The 2024 count revealed that 91 individuals had fallen into homelessness for the first time, up from 49 in 2022 and 83 in 2023, nearing the pre-pandemic high of 99 recorded in 2020.

The 2023 data showed that the increase in newly homeless individuals was particularly notable among the Hispanic and Latino population.

In 2023, 44% of those experiencing homelessness for the first time identified as Hispanic or Latino, compared to their 38% share of the total homeless population.

Last year’s count indicated that 31% of newly homeless individuals cited job loss as a contributing factor.
