Pasadena Humane Cuts Dog Adoption Fees to $50 Through Sept. 29

Pasadena Humane is charging $50 to adopt a dog through Tuesday, Sept. 29, a reduction the shelter credits to a sponsorship from MetLife.

The promotion, which Pasadena Humane calls ‘Fall in Love,‘ began Sept. 22 and applies to all dogs available for adoption at its Pasadena campus, according to the announcement the shelter released Sept. 23. Its standard fee schedule lists $150 for dogs six months and older and $300 for puppies under six months. Every dog adopted is spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before going home, the shelter said.

It is the second discounted dog adoption drive Pasadena Humane has run this month. In an account posted on its website Sept. 16, the shelter said animals were continuing to arrive while adoptions slowed, and that it had cut adult dog fees to $25 from Sept. 10 through Sept. 13 in response. Twenty-one dogs were adopted over those four days, according to that account, among them a white husky named Jon Snow who had been at the shelter since March.

“Fall is such a special time to bring a dog home,” Izzy Nidetz, the shelter’s director of placement, said in the announcement. Adopting now, Nidetz said, leaves time to settle a dog into a routine before the holidays.

Adoptions run daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the shelter’s campus at 361 S. Raymond Ave. No appointment is required, and adoptions are first come, first served. Between 9:30 and 11 a.m., counselors bring animals out to visitors for one-on-one consultations. From 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., visitors may walk the dog kennels themselves.

Adopters are asked to bring a valid ID and a form of payment, along with either a carrier or a collar or harness and leash, which the shelter requires before a pet can leave. The $50 may not be the full cost. Pasadena Humane notes that California law requires dogs older than four months to be vaccinated against rabies and licensed. Dogs adopted in the cities where the shelter handles licensing are licensed for an added fee on adoption day.

Two standing programs can lower the cost further. Under Seniors for Seniors, people 60 and older may adopt pets aged 5 and older at no charge. The shelter also waives adoption fees for active-duty and retired military personnel who show a military ID.

Pasadena Humane, a nonprofit founded in 1903, provides animal care and control services for Pasadena, Altadena and other nearby communities. It posts its adoptable dogs online, and the $50 fee ends after Sept. 29.
