Residents who want to run for City Council will have less than a month to file their candidacy after the nomination period opens Monday, February 9.

Three seats will be on the June 2 primary ballot: Districts 3, 5, and 7, currently held by Justin Jones, Jess Rivas, and Jason Lyon. The winners will serve four-year terms. The terms for all three seats expire December 7, 2026.

This is Pasadena’s first municipal election since the January 2025 Eaton Fire. The City Clerk’s office has posted displaced voter resources on its election webpage alongside candidate filing information.

The filing period runs through Friday, March 6, at 5 p.m. If an incumbent does not file by that deadline, the period extends to Wednesday, March 11, at 5:30 p.m. for other candidates in that district.

To qualify, candidates must be registered voters residing in their district when papers are issued. Nomination petitions require signatures from at least 25 registered voters in the candidate’s district. The filing fee is $25. Candidates who want a statement printed in the sample ballot pamphlet must pay a $750 deposit.

The City Clerk will hold two identical candidate workshops: Monday, February 9, at 8 a.m., and Wednesday, February 11, at 4:30 p.m. Both sessions are at City Hall, 100 North Garfield Avenue, Room S228. Nomination papers will be distributed at the workshops, and each session lasts approximately one hour with time for questions.

Appointments for nomination papers are available by calling the City Clerk’s office at (626) 744-4124 or emailing CityClerk@CityOfPasadena.net. City Hall is closed February 12 and 16.

Pasadena is divided into seven council districts. District 3 covers northwest Pasadena, bounded by the 210 Freeway, Colorado Boulevard, and Lake Avenue. District 5 covers central Pasadena near Fair Oaks and the 210. District 7 covers southwest Pasadena, bounded by Los Robles Avenue, Del Mar Boulevard, and the Pasadena Freeway.

Under the City Charter, no person may serve more than three consecutive elected terms as a councilmember.

Election information is available at CityOfPasadena.net/Elections. Voter registration is available at City Hall, public libraries, post offices, or online at RegisterToVote.ca.gov. For general information, call the City Service Center at (626) 744-7311.
