The Pasadena Police Department and Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department have announced extensive security and safety protocols for the upcoming Tournament of Roses Parade, implementing road closures, enhanced law enforcement presence, and detailed guidance for both drivers and attendees to ensure public safety during the iconic New Year’s Day event.
The department encourages the public to follow the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign, while deploying police canine teams along Colorado Boulevard as part of comprehensive security measures aimed at quickly resolving problems and removing anyone who violates the law or disturbs the peace.
Major road closures will begin December 31 at 10:00 p.m. and continue through 2:00 p.m. on January 1, affecting Colorado Boulevard from Orange Grove Boulevard to Sierra Madre Boulevard, and extending northbound on Sierra Madre to Paloma Street.
Overnight parking permits will not be required from December 22 to January 2, though vehicles parked continuously for more than 72 hours may be fined and impounded. The police department warns that vehicles parked in violation of temporary tow-away zones face fines exceeding $200.
Officials advise attendees to arrive early, plan parking ahead, and use designated parade route entry points only. Drivers should use suggested detour routes, watch for increased pedestrian activity in early morning hours, and allow extra travel time when passing through Pasadena.
Law enforcement officials have outlined specific guidelines for spectators, prohibiting tents, sofas, and makeshift seating along the parade route. Unoccupied chairs will be removed, and activities such as bonfires, fireworks, alcohol consumption in public areas, and selling items without a City permit are strictly forbidden.
No smoking policies are in effect, including cannabis and vaping devices, and throwing objects into the parade is prohibited.
Safety guidance includes keeping belongings close, securing valuables, and establishing meet-up locations for groups. Attendees should dress appropriately in layers for cold weather, especially children and seniors, while staying hydrated and consuming nourishing meals.
The City has made special accommodations for disabled visitors, offering three street-level viewing areas along the parade route. Each person with a disability may bring up to four guests, with audio description and sign language interpretation services available in designated sections. Interested parties must complete a Tournament of Roses form to request viewing space.
Emergency preparedness remains a key focus, as the Pasadena Fire Department typically handles more than twice their usual call volume during parade day. Common incidents include hypothermia, illegal burning, medical emergencies, and alcohol-related issues. For emergencies, authorities direct parade-goers to call 911, while non-emergency situations should be reported to (626) 744-4241.
A Temporary Flight Restriction will be enforced during both the parade and Rose Bowl Game, with drone operation strictly prohibited and subject to penalties including fines, arrest, or imprisonment.
