The Pasadena Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence/driver’s license checkpoint within city limits on Friday as part of ongoing efforts to reduce impaired driving, Police Chief Gene Harris announced Tuesday.
The Dec. 20 checkpoint location remains undisclosed. Police reported the location will be determined based on data showing areas with impaired driving-related crashes, according to department officials.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Lt. Anthony Russo said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety and can save lives.”
Police emphasized that impaired driving extends beyond alcohol use. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may also interfere with driving ability.
While both medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
First-time DUI offenders could face approximately $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with license suspension.
The checkpoint operation is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
