Pasadena will host a free resource fair on Sunday, Sept. 22, as part of United Against Hate Week 2024.
The Pasadena Police Department has documented four hate crimes in 2024. Pasadena City College Campus Police separately reported one racially motivated crime on campus this year.
The event, organized by city departments and local organizations, will take place at The Maxwell House, at 55 S. Grand Ave. in Pasadena, from 2 to 5 p.m.
The “Pasadena vs. Hate” Resource Fair will feature arts and crafts, community resources, and restorative justice circles led by local youth and guest speakers. Light refreshments will be provided at the family-friendly gathering, which is a collaboration between various city entities and community groups.
United Against Hate Week, running from Sept. 21 to 27, seeks to empower residents to take action in their communities and promote respect and civil discourse.
Lisa Derderian, Pasadena’s Public Information Officer, said the fair is organized by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Department, Pasadena Human Relations Commission, Western Justice Center, and Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD).
Collaborating organizations include 211LA, The Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena, Remainders Creative Reuse, and others. These partnerships aim to provide a wide range of resources and support for attendees.
Nationwide, United Against Hate Week organizers describe the event as “a call for seven days of local civic action” to address threats to community safety and civility. The initiative focuses on uniting cities and their residents to combat hate on a local level.
Organizers encourage residents to participate in various ways, including posting signs, hosting events, sharing stories, and attending rallies. The campaign emphasizes that no action is too small in the fight against hate and implicit biases.
