City departments will be hosting Pasadena’s ninth annual National Coming Out Day celebration Saturday, Oct. 11, at Memorial Park.
The free event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 85 E. Holly St. Three city departments are organizing the celebration: Public Health, Public Library, and Parks, Recreation and Community Services.
A city statement said the event will feature music, resource tables, crafts and giveaways. Organizers designed the celebration for all ages.
The gathering supports people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex or asexual. It also welcomes those with sexual orientations or gender identities not specifically named in the LGBTQIA+ acronym.
This year marks the 38th anniversary of National Coming Out Day. The observance began to recognize the first National March on Washington for lesbian and gay rights.
Nearly half of Americans know someone who is gay or lesbian, according to the statement. One in 10 knows someone who is transgender.
Pasadena is regarded as inclusive and accepting of people regardless of various characteristics. These include race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability status.
Memorial Park sits in downtown Pasadena near the intersection of Holly Street and Raymond Avenue.
