The Pasadena Unified School District is celebrating the essential work of its classified employees during the state-designated Classified School Employees Week from May 19-25.
Established in 1986 through California Senate Bill 1552, which designated the third full week of May for this observance, this annual recognition honors the crucial contributions of non-teaching staff members who serve in various roles such as security, office administration, maintenance, food service, and instructional aides.
“We are so grateful for classified employees who support our students and families as security, office, maintenance & operations, food service, instructional aides, and more,” the District stated in a public message. “#ThankYou for the impact you make each and every day”
These dedicated individuals play vital roles in ensuring schools operate smoothly and provide students with a safe, supportive learning environment. Their efforts, often behind the scenes, have a profound impact on the daily experiences of Pasadena Unified School District students and families, the District said.
The California School Employees Association, formed in 1927, played a key role in advocating for the recognition and improved working conditions of classified employees. Prior to the California School Employees Association’s advocacy efforts and the establishment of Classified School Employees Week, these staff members often worked long hours for low wages with limited benefits or acknowledgment of their critical roles in the education system.
