Older adults have distinct needs in a disaster — medications, mobility aids, communication networks, even the physics of a quick evacuation — and those distinctions become stark in communities still reckoning with the January 2025 Eaton Fire. On Wednesday morning, Pasadena Village brings the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management to the Flintridge Center for a workshop designed specifically for senior citizens navigating those questions.
Pasadena Village is a nonprofit membership community for adults over 55, built on the national “village” model that keeps older residents living independently in their own homes while connected to neighbors and volunteers who can help with everyday tasks. More than 250 members now participate in the organization’s walking groups, support circles, learning programs and service networks across the west San Gabriel Valley.
The Eaton Fire sharpened the stakes. Pasadena Village has devoted a dedicated Disaster Relief & Recovery page on its website to connecting members and neighbors with resources, and its post-fire programming has included wellness classes, Eaton Fire-specific support groups and distribution of yoga mats to those displaced by the disaster.
Wednesday’s workshop is hosted in the same building where Pasadena Village maintains its office — the Flintridge Center on West Mountain Street, the nonprofit workforce development and community services organization that has served Northwest Pasadena and West Altadena since 1986. County emergency preparedness presenters are expected to walk attendees through go-bag essentials, evacuation planning for households with mobility considerations, and the kinds of communication backups that become critical when power, cell service and broadband go down at the same time.
Registration is requested through Pasadena Village in advance.
The emergency preparedness workshop will run on Wednesday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Flintridge Center, 236 W. Mountain St., in Pasadena. For more information, call (626) 765-6037 or visit pasadenavillage.org. Registration required.
