Pasadena’s three free World Cup watch parties drew more than 5,000 people, while related social-media content generated more than 1 million views, figures scheduled for presentation Tuesday in an update that says the events helped test operations ahead of LA28.

The three FIFA World Cup watch parties were held June 12, June 24 and July 6 through a partnership involving the city’s Economic Development Division, Visit Pasadena, LA Metro, the Pasadena Center Operating Company, Verizon Wireless and Angel City.

The events drew more than 5,000 attendees combined to watch Team USA and Mexico and included live match screenings, food trucks, family-friendly activities, soccer games, music and a beer garden.

The city said the watch parties helped strengthen partnerships, test event operations and build community excitement as Pasadena prepares for its role as a venue city for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The city said the watch parties also generated significant media exposure.

Television coverage of the USA-Belgium watch party reached approximately 366,500 viewers, according to the Economic Development Update. The reported total included two ABC7 audience figures of 84,200 and 76,400 views, along with 100,900 for Telemundo, 59,400 for NBC4 and 45,400 for KTLA 5.

Social-media content associated with all three watch parties generated more than 1 million views, according to the city. Content connected with the Mexico match watch party accounted for 559,000 views.

The attendance and media figures are included in an Aug. 18 Economic Development Update from Economic Development Director David A. Klug. The memorandum provides an update on market conditions and the Economic Development Division’s efforts.

The update is listed as an information-only item on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting of the Pasadena City Council’s Economic Development and Technology Committee.

The committee is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chamber, Room S249, at Pasadena City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave.
