Police Oversight Commission to Discuss Youth Programs

The city’s police oversight commission will discuss the department’s youth intervention and prevention programs at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The District Attorney’s office released its report on the officer-involved shooting of Anthony McClain late Wednesday and said it would not prosecute the officer who shot and killed McClain, but since the matter is not on the Oversight Committee’s pre-published agenda it cannot be discussed by the committee during the meeting.

The meeting will be the first for new commissioner Dr. Paula Verrette, the District 6 nominee approved to sit on the committee on Monday by the city council. Verrette is pediatrics specialist in Pasadena.

The commission’s agenda is set to focus on five police youth-oriented community programs: the Police Athletic League, the Summer Leadership Academy, the Public Safety Academy, Kids Safety and the Explorers programs.

“In an effort to increase our prevention and intervention efforts in the community, the community relations section is committed to providing our community with an array of ongoing and annual programs, presentations, and special events intended to serve the entire community,” a presentation in the commission agenda reads.

The department will also give the commission an update on its use of Nixle and the department’s media relations policy.

The NIXLE platform is an opt-in system that delivers informative text messages, application notifications and/or email to community members that range in information from community, advisory and alert.

The commission continues to meet without an independent auditor.

Brian Maxety left the city in January and returned to the Seattle Police Department as its chief operating officer.

The IPA’s duties include, among other things, serving as a best-practices adviser to the (Police Oversight) Commission, reviewing categorical uses of force by Pasadena Police Department officers, reviewing investigations of personnel complaints of bias-based policing, and recommending changes to PPD policies, procedures, or officer training.

The resignation came just two months after the commissioners had formally convened to study their duties and responsibilities and discuss their priorities and work plan, among others.

The meeting will be broadcast on Zoom at this link. Telephone access is available by dialing (669) 900-6833 and using Webinar ID: 837 1462 9907
