Food 4 Less/Foods Co. and Ralphs Grocery Company have donated over 35,000 cartons of shelf-stable Chobani Super Milk and nearly 1,000 boxes of General Mills cereal to schools and relief organizations in Pasadena and Altadena, the grocers announced Thursday.
“Many students rely on their school for their first meal of the day,” said Salvador Ramirez, corporate affairs manager at Food 4 Less/Foods Co. and Ralphs Grocery Company. “With so many schools and community centers impacted by the wildfires, we are grateful to be a part of this effort to donate one of the most essential staples to help feed kids and their families during such a difficult time.”
The donation addresses a critical need identified by Feeding America, which reports milk as one of the most nutritious but least donated items to food banks.
Patrick Conyers, Executive Director of Pasadena Educational Foundation, expressed gratitude for the support: “We deeply appreciate the generosity of Chobani, General Mills, and our partners at Ralphs and Food 4 Less/Foods Co. Their commitment to supporting local families ensures that students have access to nutritious meals that help them focus and succeed in school. Partnerships like these strengthen our community and make a real difference for the students and families we serve.”
This initiative forms part of a broader response to the wildfires. Food 4 Less/Foods Co., Ralphs Grocery Company, and their parent company The Kroger Family of Companies (NYSE:KR) have been providing monetary donations, essential supplies, and food and water deliveries to evacuees, firefighters, first responders, the American Red Cross, and local Feeding America-affiliated food banks.
Both grocery chains operate under the purpose “to Feed the Human Spirit™” and maintain headquarters in Los Angeles County. Food 4 Less/Foods Co. employs more than 9,000 associates serving customers in 121 warehouse-format supermarkets across Southern California, Illinois and Indiana, and in Central and Northern California. Ralphs serves customers through 184 supermarkets across Southern California with more than 18,000 associates.
The donation is aligned with the grocers’ support of Kroger’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative, which aims to end hunger in communities and eliminate waste within the company by 2025.
