South Pasadena police officers used anti-overdose medication to rescue a man who overdosed on the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl while riding aboard a Metro Gold Line train earlier this week, authorities said.
Officials were summoned to a medical emergency shortly before noon Tuesday at the Gold Line Station at 905 Meridian Ave., South Pasadena Police said in a written statement.
“Officers learned a 29-year-old male passenger had ingested fentanyl while on the train and suffered a cardiac emergency,” the statement said. “Arriving on the scene, officers found a witness performing CPR on the subject, who was unresponsive.”
The officers administered a dose of the anti-overdose medication naloxone, also known as Narcan.
“Seconds after the dose was administered, the subject began to breathe on his own,” according to the statement. “By the time he arrived at Huntington Hospital, he was conscious and speaking with paramedics.”
