New equipment and safety surface aim to improve accessibility and play value.

The city is moving forward with a $1,057,026 project to replace outdated playground equipment at Brenner Park with new structures and a safer rubberized surface.

The Brenner Park Playground Improvement Project will install new play structures and an improved surface for better safety and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The 1.7-acre neighborhood park sits at 235 Barthe Drive on the corner of Mountain Street and Barthe Drive.

It features a softball diamond, a tennis court, a lighted basketball court, picnic areas and restrooms.

The existing playground equipment was installed in 2009 but has become obsolete compared to newer installations at other city parks.

“The replacement of the play equipment will provide a play environment of consistent quality with those recently installed at McDonald Park, Desiderio Park, and the new Playhouse Village Park,” according to the city’s Public Works Department.

“In addition, the new rubberized play surface will increase and enhance ADA accessibility and compliance.”

Officials also conducted a community survey to collect additional input from neighborhood residents following the meeting.

The design was completed and approved last year, and construction is planned to begin in fall as part of the city’s five-year capital improvement program.

The park operates daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
