A vehicle collision with a gas station pump coupled with the station’s emergency shut off malfunctioning lead to 1,300-gallon gas spill Sunday that ended up spreading south in a wash towards San Marino and Alhambra, authorities reported.
Pasadena city spokesperson Lisa Derderian said that Pasadena Fire Dept. units were called to a Union 76 station at the corner of Glenarm Street and Arroyo Parkway after a vehicle drove into a gas pump at 3:17 p.m.
When the emergency shut-off malfunctioned and gasoline continued to spill, power was cut to the building, Derderian said. Approximately 1,300 gallons of unleaded fuel leaked out.
A Pasadena Hazmat representative, as well as Los Angeles County Hazmat units, arrived to facilitate cleanup shortly thereafter, Derderian said.
The gasoline spill entered the Alhambra Wash, according to alerts issued by the cities of South Pasadena, San Marino and Alhambra.
Los Angeles County Flood Control crews were at the scene as of around 8 p.m. Sunday, South Pasadena police said.
Residents near the spill sites were advised to stay inside their residences with the windows and doors closed.
Alhambra police said the spill left a lingering gas smell, which was expected to dissipate sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
Broadcast video from the scene this morning showed the gas station
open for business.
