Southern California’s oldest independent bookstore, Vroman’s, is marking 130 years of literary and cultural significance with a community celebration in Pasadena this month.

The historic institution, founded in 1894 by A.C. Vroman, will host a free anniversary gathering featuring raffles, historical displays and limited-edition merchandise unveiling on November 23.

“Our longevity is because of the people,” said Julia Cowlishaw, Vroman’s Bookstore CEO. “Our dedicated customers and our dedicated team of employees are the reason we are still here.”

The two-story bookstore, which has garnered a 4.8-star rating from nearly 3,000 reviews, hosts more than 400 free community events annually at 695 E. Colorado Blvd.

The anniversary celebration, scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m., will include raffles every half hour, displays featuring 1894 trivia, and opportunities for community members to share memories.

“We strive to be a place for discovery and inspiration through our selection of books and gifts, and a gathering place for the community. We believe in bringing people together,” Cowlishaw said.

The store has modernized while maintaining its heritage, incorporating the 1894 Wine Bar and Tepito coffee shop into its traditional bookselling operation.

Notable visitors to the independent retailer have included Presidents Clinton and Carter, alongside literary figures Ray Bradbury and Neil Gaiman, cementing its status as a cultural destination.

“A.C. Vroman believed in giving to the community and we continue that mission today through our Vroman’s Gives Back program and partnerships with schools and nonprofit organizations like Friends in Deed,” Cowlishaw noted.

The bookstore, which received the Bookseller of the Year award in 2008, demonstrated resilience through the COVID-19 pandemic while maintaining strong community engagement through various programs and partnerships.

“Our entrepreneurial DNA means we will continue to evolve and grow in ways that will hopefully surprise and delight everyone,” Cowlishaw said regarding the store’s future plans.

The establishment has created a Vroman’s Walk of Fame, recognizing local authors including Lian Dolan, Naomi Hirahara, Michael Connelly, Lisa See, Leigh Bardugo, Luis J. Rodriguez, and Walter Mosley.
