Truck Takes Turn for the Worse, Resulting in Damage to 25 to 30 Cars on the Foothill Freeway Saturday Night

A truck attempting to turn onto an overpass onramp to the I-210 Foothill freeway about 10:45 p.m. Saturday smashed into metal fencing and portions of the overpass which fell, damaging 25 to 30 cars traveling on the roadway below.

Most of the cars suffered punctured tires, in at least case, all four tires. Police said there were no injuries.

A view of the entrance to the overpass onramp shows it is narrow and forbids truck traffic.

A long line of immobile cars with flat tires quickly lined the freeway, which was temporarily shut down. Numerous California Highway Patrol units and a small fleet of tow trucks tended to the damaged vehicles.

The onramp descends from the Fair Oaks Avenue overpass into the I-210’s eastbound carpool lane and several signs at its entrance forbid trucks from entering.

“The big rig was trying to get on the freeway on that entrance and hit the fence. When the big rig tried to back up, it ripped the fence off and [it] fell onto the freeway,” one witness told Pasadena Now.

Another said it was the fourth time he had seen this entrance get struck.

“Can’t believe no vehicle has actually gone over the side. Well, not in the 8 years I’ve lived next to it,” he said.

At the scene about midnight, Pasadena Police Lt. Carolyn Gordon said the truck’s driver likely would not be arrested for any wrongdoing due to the incident.
