Tuesday’s Extreme Heat Forecast Prompts Cooling Center Opening in Pasadena

Pasadena is bracing for a sweltering mid-week heat wave, with temperatures expected to approach 100 degrees on Tuesday. In response, the City announced the activation of a cooling center at the Jackie Robinson Community Center.

The center, located at 1020 N. Fair Oaks Ave., will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, and Wednesday, Aug. 21. 

According to the National Weather Service forecast as of Monday afternoon, Tuesday is expected to be sunny and hot, with a high near 98. The heat is predicted to persist into Wednesday, with a high near 91 forecast.

Local officials are urging residents to take precautions against the high temperatures. 

“If possible, stay indoors in an air-conditioned environment, especially young children and older adults,” the city advised in a statement on the City Manager’s webpage. “Drink water often! Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water.” 

The advisory also listed symptoms of dehydration such as dizziness, fatigue, and confusion.

Officials recommend wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and avoiding unnecessary exertion during peak heat hours. They stress never leaving anyone, including pets, unattended in closed vehicles.

Pasadena Water and Power also recommended cutting back on energy conservation during this period of high usage. Suggestions include adjusting air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees, limiting the use of major appliances during peak hours, ventilating homes in early morning and evening, and charging electric vehicles before or after peak hours.

The recent high rain season has led to increased vegetation growth, which is now drying out, raising concerns about potential brush fires. The Pasadena Fire Department is cautioning residents about the use of landscaping equipment, which could potentially ignite dry brush.

Public health officials are particularly concerned about vulnerable populations during this heatwave. They advise checking on neighbors, family, and friends, especially older adults, to ensure their well-being during the hot spell.

While the Jackie Robinson Community Center is the only pre-designated cooling center in Pasadena, the city’s public libraries also offer air-conditioned spaces for residents seeking relief from the heat.

“For life-threatening emergencies always remember to dial 9-1-1,” the advisory said. “Remain calm while on the phone. Be prepared to give operators your name and location and a brief, accurate description of the nature of your call.”
