The California Department of Motor Vehicles launched online renewal for commercial driver’s licenses on June 10. The secure, paperless service allows eligible commercial drivers to renew up to 120 days before their license expires without needing to visit a Department of Motor Vehicles office.
“Our commercial drivers keep California’s economy moving,” said Department of Motor Vehicles Director Steve Gordon. “This new online renewal service is another step in making Department of Motor Vehicles services faster, easier and available without a trip to the office.”
The new digital service offers multiple convenience features designed to accommodate busy commercial drivers. Commercial driver’s license holders can complete their transactions on mobile devices, desktop computers, or tablets using various payment methods.
The system allows customers to upload required documents, including Transportation Security Administration clearance and medical exam records, directly through the online platform.
The online renewal option reflects the Department of Motor Vehicles’ broader effort to modernize services by expanding the range of tasks that can be completed on the Department of Motor Vehicles website. This commercial driver’s license service joins other eligible online renewals including driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals.
According to the DMV, customer information remains protected through secure systems, and the paperless process eliminates the need for physical document handling. The 120-day advance renewal window provides flexibility for drivers to complete the process when convenient.
The Department of Motor Vehicles has expanded digital services across multiple areas, with most Department of Motor Vehicles tasks no longer requiring office visits. Simple self-service transactions are no longer available in physical offices, encouraging customers to use Department of Motor Vehicles online services and other service channels before visiting offices.
The agency’s “Before Going to an Office — Try Online First” approach prioritizes digital solutions for customer convenience.
Customers can access the Service Advisor on the Department of Motor Vehicles website to explore options for completing various Department of Motor Vehicles tasks. To receive paperless vehicle registration and driver’s license renewal notices, customers must opt in by creating a secure online account and registering at dmv.ca.gov.
