Pasadena’s Design Commission will deliberate on Tuesday on a proposal to demolish two buildings at 2771 E. Foothill Blvd. and build onsite a new three- and four-story, 35,874 square-foot mixed-use project with 5,329 square feet of ground floor commercial and 21 residential units above subterranean parking.
The proposal is in the Preliminary Consultation phase of the city’s approval process.
In a report for the Design Commission, the Department of Planning and Community Development said the two buildings on the project site at the northwest corner of E. Foothill Blvd. and N. Daisy Ave. were constructed in 1936 and are being used as a mechanic shop. These buildings, along with other related improvements, will be demolished to make way for the proposed project.
The design of the new building will reflect a contemporary interpretation of the Spanish Colonial Revival style, with pitched and flat roofs, projecting and recessed building volumes, and a rich material palette including stucco, wood trellises, protecting windows, tile, clay tile roofs, and ornamental statues. The building will also feature canvas sunshades on the residential windows facing the south.
The Planning Department said overall, the design aims to create a unique architectural concept that blends harmoniously with the commercial and residential surroundings.
During the consultation, the project will be evaluated on the basis of various design guidelines, including those outlined in the Land Use Element of the General Plan, the East Pasadena Specific Plan, and the Design Guidelines for Neighborhood Commercial and Multi-family Residential Districts.
Members of the community are encouraged to participate in the consultation process. Residents, businesses, and other stakeholders can review the project description and design guidelines and provide feedback and suggestions on the design concept.
For in-person participation, community members are advised to complete an online speaker card on this website, www.cityofpasadena.net/planning/public-comment. They can then attend the meeting by coming to the Pasadena City Council Chamber, Room S249 at City Hall on Tuesday before 6:30 p.m.
