Fifty students at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine received their white coats at the Pasadena Convention Center on Friday, Aug. 14, marking the formal start of medical training for the Pasadena school’s Class of 2030.

It was the seventh White Coat Ceremony since the school opened in 2020, and the third for Dean and CEO John L. Dalrymple, MD.

Parents, school leaders, faculty and staff watched each student cross the stage as a designated faculty physician placed a short white coat on their shoulders, the school said.

“The coat does not make the person; the person makes the coat. The compassion does not come from the coat; the integrity does not come from the coat,” Dalrymple said in his keynote address.

Mohamed “Moe” Aboufares, senior associate dean and chief financial and operations officer, presented the Class of 2030 pin on behalf of Greg Adams, chair and CEO of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals. Lindia Willies-Jacobo introduced the Physician’s Oath, and six student editors read the Class of 2030 Community Agreement.

“I’m noticing a great cohesion, great sense of camaraderie between us. We’ve only known each other, like, three weeks, 21 days,” student Javier De la Peña said.

“When I put this white coat on for the first time, I felt a very large responsibility,” said Elizabeth Trinh.

The class has 50 students, with an average age at admission of 24, a mean MCAT score of 515 and a mean grade point average of 3.85, according to the school.

Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine is a private, four-year medical school at 98 S. Los Robles Ave. in Pasadena. It is affiliated with the Kaiser Permanente health system and offers a Doctor of Medicine degree.

The school opened in summer 2020 and graduated its first class, 37 students, in May 2024.

Its four-year, case-based INSPIRE curriculum integrates biomedical, clinical and health systems sciences, beginning with an early immersive experience and concluding with residency preparation. The school holds full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and initial institutional accreditation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission.
