The Pasadena Community Foundation (PCF) has released the list of recipients of its annual Capital Grants Program, awarding $603,000 to 25 local nonprofit organizations. The grants will support a wide array of community services and initiatives in the Pasadena area.

Jeannine Bogaard, PCF’s Director of Community Impact, emphasized the importance of the program.

“By funding vital equipment and facility improvements, our Capital Grants ensure that nonprofit organizations can maintain and enhance their daily operations and strengthen their future operations,” she said in a statement.

As the foundation’s largest annual grant program, Capital Grants typically awards more than half a million dollars each year. It is designed to support facility improvements and equipment purchases at local organizations, contributing to PCF’s overall annual disbursement of over $2 million to Pasadena-area nonprofits.

The statement said PCF will grant a total of $2.5 million by year’s end. The Capital Grants Program includes two $50,000 Capital Campaign Grants for transformative projects. The Altadena Library Foundation and Planned Parenthood Pasadena & San Gabriel Valley (PPPSGV) were selected for these larger grants.

The statement said the Altadena Library Foundation will use its grant to support the renovation and expansion of the Bob Lucas Memorial Library. The project will nearly double the library’s square footage, adding an Adult Literacy Center, expanding the children’s area, and creating an outdoor reading garden.

“With grant support from the Pasadena Community Foundation, this building project will help the Altadena Library District realize Bob Lucas’s vision,” said Mark Mariscal, Board chair of the Altadena Library Foundation. “(Lucas) understood the enormous influence and power of the written word, and he hoped that by making books, literature, and literacy skills training more available, others would learn how personal freedom could be achieved through reading.”

PPPSGV plans to use its grant to support a new, comprehensive campus that will bring its Pasadena-area medical service center and administrative headquarters to one location.

“For twenty years, it has been my dream to modernize our Planned Parenthood health center in Pasadena, creating a safe and welcoming space to see more patients, offer new services, and expand access to sexual and reproductive care and education,” Sheri Bonner, PPPSGV President & CEO, said.

The remaining $503,000 will be distributed among 23 organizations for various projects. These include restoration work by Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy, repairs at Beacon Housing’s affordable housing site, and equipment purchases for organizations like Club 21 Learning & Resource Center and LAist.

Other notable recipients include the Pasadena/Altadena Coalition of Transformative Leaders (PACTL) for a Latino food vendor social enterprise, Pasadena Playhouse for a new backstage communications system, and the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center for new pool cover lane lines.
