As the holiday season approaches, Pasadena nonprofits have launched Giving Tuesday appeals to locals to think “outside their shopping bags” and share with those in need. The nonprofits are seeking donations to address pressing community needs from student housing assistance to animal welfare.

The global day of philanthropy, falling on December 3, arrives as local organizations face increasing demand for services. Following the consumer-focused Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday encourages charitable donations and volunteering.

Nonprofits of almost every stripe have issued appeals.

Among the participants, the Pasadena City College Foundation is focusing on its Lancer Care Center, which provides emergency housing aid and food assistance to students. Union Station Homeless Services aims to expand its outreach and shelter programs throughout the San Gabriel Valley.

Other participating organizations include Pasadena Humane, seeking funds for animal medical care and adoption services, and Foothill Family Service, which provides mental health support to low-income families.

Leadership Pasadena is raising money for community leadership development scholarships, while Pasadena Meals on Wheels seeks to expand meal delivery services to homebound residents.

The Bloom Again Foundation is requesting support for women facing medical-related financial hardships, focusing on urgent living expenses. The Assistance League of Pasadena continues its Operation School Bell program, providing clothing to children in need.

Day One is fundraising for youth empowerment and substance abuse prevention programs.

Ability First, Sycamores and many other worthy causes beckon donors.

Local residents can contribute through individual organization websites or social media campaigns. Many nonprofits are sharing impact reports and personal stories to demonstrate their community influence.

The movement, created in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y in New York City in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, has evolved into a global phenomenon with over 80 countries participating, encouraging generosity beyond monetary donations, including volunteering and advocacy for local causes.

For more information about participating organizations, residents can visit individual nonprofit websites or consult GreatNonprofits.org‘s directory of verified organizations.
