Pasadena-based Dine Brands Global is eyeing its hometown as a potential launch site for its first dual-branded Applebee’s and IHOP restaurant in the United States, according to a presentation by a City economic development official.
The novel concept would feature shared kitchen facilities but separate dining areas for each brand, according to David Klug, Pasadena’s Economic Development Director.
Dine Brands Global Inc. was originally founded as IHOP in 1958. It now operates three major chains: Applebee’s, IHOP, and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. As of March 2023, it supports around 3,600 restaurants in 17 international markets. It is headquartered in the 10 West Walnut complex in Old Pasadena.
Klug told the City Council’s Economic Development and Technology Committee on Tuesday that Dine Brands, which owns both restaurant chains, has already opened 10 of these hybrid locations internationally.
“They’re looking to have dual-branded stores and they’re looking in Pasadena as a possible market to launch their first dual-branded store,” Klug said.
The company’s CEO John Peyton reported that the international dual-branded locations have performed well, with franchisee interest being positive, according to Klug’s presentation.
Dine Brands is still conducting research and development to ensure the concept’s success in the U.S. market before moving forward with any openings.
The first U.S. locations combining Applebee’s and IHOP are expected to open in the first quarter of 2025, Klug said, citing the company’s plans.
