Freshman midfielder Rachel Schroeder scored a pair of goals as the Pasadena City College women’s soccer team registered its first victory in six games of the 2014 season Tuesday afternoon with a 2-0 triumph over Cuyamaca. It was the Lancers’ home opener at Robinson Stadium and was a make-up of a postponed (rain) match last week that originally was scheduled at El Cajon.
The Lancers (1-3-2 overall) dominated Cuyamaca (0-5), outshooting the Coyotes, 23-2. Cuyamaca has yet to score a goal this season.
Schroeder was a one-woman wrecking crew as she scored in the 53rd minute taking a cross by Ani Hemelians and driving a one-timer shot into the upper left corner for a 1-0 PCC lead. She added her second goal when Sara Oceguera made a short cross inside the goalie box and Schroeder lifted a close-range attempt for her second goal and team-leading third of the year.
Schroeder, from Arcadia High, had other opportunities, making eight shots and hitting the post on one attempt late in the game.
The Lancers’ defense was strong again behind the play of sophomore defenders Bailey Shaw-Rodriguez and Karina Costilla. Goalie Angelique Ulmer made one save for the shutout and it was on a tough play. In the 64th minute, Cuyamaca’s Elizabeth Nerat raced down the sideline on a breakaway and crossed it to Alexa Pizza whose attempt was stoned by Ulmer as the two players collided in the box.
“It was our first home game and it was nice for the players to taste a victory in front of PCC fans,” said Lancers head coach Reggie Rivas. “Rachel was oustanding in creating plays and working with the forwards for center shots. Ani’s speed helped open up some space for Rachel on that first goal. We played a complete 90 minutes and our defenders shut down any Cuyamaca opportunity.”
The Lancers next play a 6 p.m. non-conference contest on Friday, Sept. 26 against Mt. San Jacinto at Robinson Stadium.
