United Farm Workers Endorses Adam Schiff for U.S. Senate

The United Farm Workers (UFW), the nation’s largest farm workers’ union, has announced its endorsement of Adam Schiff for the U.S. Senate.

Schiff, 63, is currently in his 12th term in the U.S. Congress, where he represents West Pasadena and the 30th California District. His term ends on Jan. 3, 2025.

In January last year, Schiff, a Democrat, announced he was running for the Senate to represent California. He is on the ballot in the special primary on March 5, seeking to occupy the seat once held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

The UFW, which represents nearly 5,000 workers across California, expressed confidence in Schiff’s commitment to advocating for farm workers.

“As thousands of UFW members go to work in California’s vineyards, farms, and fields, farm workers deserve a relentless advocate in the U.S. Senate who will fight for farm workers’ right to organize, strong heat safety protections, and a just immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for the workers who feed our nation,” United Farm Workers President Teresa Romero said in a statement released by Schiff’s campaign. “UFW rank-and-file leaders met with several candidates in this campaign. We are confident that Adam will be the champion that California farm workers deserve in the U.S. Senate.”

In the statement, Schiff said he is thrilled to receive the UFW’s endorsement.

“UFW has always been on the front lines of protecting the livelihoods of farm workers and their families,” he said. “In the U.S. Senate, I look forward to working arm in arm with UFW in the struggle for better pay, safer working conditions, and a more just immigration system.”

Schiff has received endorsements from more than 280 current and former California elected officials, including Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, and 65 percent of the California Democratic congressional delegation.

He has also earned the endorsements of 13 statewide labor unions and numerous local labor unions throughout the state, including the Laborers’ International Union of North America, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the California-Nevada Conference of Operating Engineers, California State Association of Electrical Workers, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Communications Workers of America, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and the International Association of Fire Fighters, among others.

Between 2019 and 2023, Schiff chaired the U.S. House Intelligence Committee. He previously served as chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Schiff was a member of the California State Senate from 1996 to 2000.
