Luz Aguilar, 26, a deputy to Los Angeles City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, was taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon. Her sister, Antonia Aguilar, was also arrested at approximately the same time, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records. Both were held on $50,000 bail before being released Monday afternoon. They are scheduled to appear in court on June 30.
Los Angeles Councilmember Jurado called the allegations against her aide “deeply concerning” and placed Aguilar on unpaid leave while reviewing the incident.
Pasadena City Councilmember Cole spoke publicly about the arrests during an anti-ICE demonstration in Pasadena on Sunday.
“I’ve just seen pictures of my two daughters on a curb in downtown Los Angeles in handcuffs,” Cole said, according to Los Angeles Magazine. “So I’m going to be figuring out where they are so I can go bail them out.”
The arrests occurred amid escalating protests in Los Angeles following federal immigration enforcement actions on June 6. Demonstrators clashed with law enforcement, leading to more than 50 arrests over the weekend. Federal officials deployed National Guard troops to quell unrest, prompting legal challenges from California Governor Gavin Newsom.
