This September 18, Pasadena first responders will join with residents to transform the Rose Bowl grounds into a gathering place for an essential community conversation—one about mental health and suicide prevention.

Hundreds are expected to come together at Pasadena’s fourth annual “Walk for Life.”

Organized by the Pasadena Police Department’s H.O.P.E. Team and Wellness Unit, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, the free citywide event features a 5K walk, resource fair, and talks by local officials and mental health advocates. The walk coincides with National Suicide Prevention Month and is designed to foster open dialogue and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness.

“This is about showing people they’re not alone,” said Lt. Monica Cuellar about last year’s event. “Education and visibility are key to breaking down fear and misconceptions.”

The walk began in 2021 as a small gathering of first responders honoring a colleague lost to suicide. Since then, it has expanded to include the broader community while maintaining a focus on emergency personnel. Last year’s event drew approximately 250 participants and featured a symbolic dove release. Organizers expect an even larger turnout this year.

City leaders have consistently supported the initiative. Mayor Victor Gordo, who previously shared his personal experience of losing a friend to suicide, has said that community solidarity is important.

“We need to do better to let people know they are not alone,” Gordo said at a past event. In 2024, City Manager Miguel Márquez represented the city in Gordo’s absence, reaffirming City Hall’s commitment.

The walk also highlights the mental health challenges faced by first responders. Pasadena Fire Chief Chad Augustin and Police Chief Gene Harris have spoken candidly about the emotional toll of their professions, urging colleagues to seek help.

“Law enforcement folks are people, too,” Harris said.

The event’s resource fair is expected to include over 25 organizations offering crisis support, counseling, and suicide prevention training.

The event begins at 5 p.m. at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl Stadium, Lot H. The walk will begin promptly at 5:45 p.m.
