Mountain View Cemetery Commemorates America’s Fallen Heroes This Memorial Day

Published on Monday, May 20, 2024 | 4:00 am

On Memorial Day, Mountain View Cemetery in Altadena will provide a unique opportunity for families to walk through America’s past and pay respects to the nation’s fallen heroes.

Nestled below the San Gabriel Mountains, the cemetery spans 60 acres and serves as a historical sanctuary for many who shaped America, including Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman and sci-fi writer Octavia Butler.

The cemetery is home to over 700 Union and 70 Confederate graves from the Civil War, as well as markers honoring veterans of the world wars and the Spanish-American War. The event promises to be a profound family experience, providing both a lesson in history and a chance to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a ceremony at Vista Del Monte at 9 a.m., followed by the placing of flags on the graves of veterans. At 2 p.m., legendary local historian Nick Smith will narrate a short, informative, and entertaining backstory describing some of the timeless gravesites at Mountain View and answer questions prior to a short walking tour.

Visitors can also explore the cemetery’s Heritage Circle, where California’s pioneer families and statesmen rest.

Cemetery gates will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 2400 N. Fair Oaks Ave. (north of Woodbury) in Altadena, with plenty of parking available.
