Renters in Pasadena’s rent-stabilized apartments can now look up the maximum legal rent for their unit and compare it to what they’re actually paying, thanks to newly public data on the city’s Rental Registry portal.
The expanded online database reveals previously hard-to-access information about the city’s rent-controlled housing stock: maximum allowable rents, actual rents charged, tenant turnover dates from the past year, and unit sizes and bedroom counts.
The transparency push, spurred by Pasadena’s Charter Article XVIII, Section 1812, marks a significant shift in how rental housing data is shared between landlords, tenants and the public. Previously, much of this information remained siloed or required formal requests to access.
“Data collected through the Rental Registry helps the City better understand the local rental housing landscape, from both the tenant and landlord perspectives, and informs future policy decisions, program development, and community engagement efforts aimed at maintaining fair and stable housing in Pasadena,” according to the city’s announcement.
