Both IT Cafes run from 10 a.m. to noon at the Village office at 236 W. Mountain St., #113, in Pasadena. Trained staff and volunteers will set up the glasses and guide veterans through using them day to day. Veterans can also receive the same free technical assistance offered to everyone else.
The cafes are run with ATM, or Ayuda Técnica para Mayores, an organization founded by local high school students whose volunteers give one-on-one help in English and Spanish, Pasadena Village said. Older adults may attend either or both sessions and are asked to bring their laptop, smartphone, iPhone, watch or other devices. Coffee and community connections come with each session.
The glasses can help users listen and respond to messages, get notification alerts, listen to music, hear Meta AI guidance and describe their surroundings. A Call a Volunteer feature built in partnership with Be My Eyes connects blind and low-vision users with volunteers who describe what they are seeing and help complete daily tasks. The glasses come through a Meta donation program for legally blind U.S. veterans, who can also request a pair at bva.org/glasses.
The Aug. 22 session is sponsored by Firefly Counseling, which will share information about its services there, Pasadena Village said. The Pasadena practice offers therapy to older adults struggling with grief, life transitions and more.
