Jeremy Moreland, an academic administrator recognized for leading significant institutional growth efforts, has been named president of Pasadena’s Saybrook University, the pioneering hybrid education institution announced Monday.
Dr. Moreland, who recently concluded a transformative tenure as president of William Woods University in Missouri, takes leadership at Saybrook during a strategic moment, as the university emphasizes innovation and learner-centered education, university officials said.
At William Woods, Moreland oversaw initiatives credited with increasing student enrollment, introducing new degree programs, expanding online educational offerings, and significantly improving philanthropic support.
“We are thrilled to welcome Jeremy Moreland as the next president of Saybrook University,” noted Patricia Breen, Ph.D., Chair of Saybrook’s Board of Trustees, highlighting Moreland’s “proven ability to lead institutions to new levels of success” and commitment to producing “strong humanistic leaders who go on to positively impact their fields and communities.”
Saybrook University, founded in 1971 and located at 55 West Eureka Street in Pasadena, was among the first institutions in the U.S. to offer online graduate education designed specifically for working professionals, officials said.
The university combines virtual instruction with structured in-person experiences, a model increasingly prevalent among institutions nationwide.
Joining Saybrook represents “an honor,” Dr. Moreland said in a university-issued statement, given the institution’s “bold commitment to social transformation and dedication to the humanistic tradition.”
“I look forward to working together to nurture an innovative, learner-centered community,” he continued, “ensuring that Saybrook thrives both now and in the future.”
Michael Horowitz, Ph.D., Chancellor of The Community Solution Education System—a nonprofit network of institutions including Saybrook—emphasized Moreland’s collaborative approach and innovative leadership style, making him uniquely suited to lead Saybrook’s next chapter.
“His passion for student success and his understanding of the needs of today’s learners make him the ideal choice,” Dr. Horowitz emphasized.
Prior to his tenure at William Woods, Moreland served as provost and chief academic officer at St. Thomas University in Florida, where enrollment and student retention rates significantly improved under his guidance. He holds both a Master of Science and Ph.D. in General Experimental Psychology from Texas Christian University, credentials that underscore his long-standing advocacy for learner-centered education and socially engaged scholarship.
Saybrook’s educational philosophy remains deeply embedded in the humanistic tradition, aiming explicitly to empower students to actively pursue social justice and community sustainability, according to university materials. This approach, education analysts suggest, resonates strongly within current educational trends favoring hybrid learning and curricula closely tied to professional practice and social responsibility.
Administrators confirmed that Moreland’s initial agenda will involve extensive consultations with faculty, alumni, and students to collaboratively define strategic priorities designed to enhance Saybrook’s competitiveness and distinctive educational approach.
Dr. Moreland’s presidency is effective immediately, with a series of introductory community meetings scheduled over the coming weeks intended to outline his vision and promote campus-wide dialogue.
