Tournament Of Roses Adapts Historic Tradition To Support Fire-Displaced Students, Expands Community Reach

The Tournament of Roses is making history by revamping its 137-year-old Rose Court selection process to support students affected by the Eaton Fire and broaden eligibility for young women from neighboring communities. These changes exemplify the 2026 parade theme, “The Magic in Teamwork,” spotlighting community strength and resilience in Pasadena’s recovery.

“When we saw how the Eaton Fire impacted local students and families, especially those who had to relocate temporarily, we wanted to make sure they have every opportunity to be part of this experience. The Rose Court experience is rooted in community, and that means showing up when our community is going through a tough time,” said Candy Carlson, the Tournament of Roses’ director of communications.

Applications for the 2026 Rose Court opened July 31.

Initial interviews are set to take place on Saturday, September 6 (10 a.m. to noon, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.) and on Monday, September 8 (3 p.m. to 6 p.m.) at Tournament House, 391 S. Orange Grove Blvd., in Pasadena.

Expanding beyond Pasadena, eligibility now includes Eagle Rock, Highland Park, San Gabriel and Alhambra.

“It’s added a meaningful new dimension to the Rose Court experience. Each of these communities brings unique stories and perspectives, and we’re grateful for the chance to hear from students we may not have reached in the past,” Carlson said.

Students displaced by the Eaton Fire can apply if they attend a qualifying school, with applications accepting both current and fire-impacted addresses. The process features an anonymous badge system to ensure fair selection, with feedback-driven enhancements such as online interview resources and orientation from past court members.

Candidates must be female, ages 17 to 21, maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, and attend a school within eligible districts.

About 250 applicants are narrowed to 25 finalists, with seven selected to serve as ambassadors at more than 100 community events, culminating in the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game. Each Rose Court member receives a $7,500 scholarship.

“The theme, ‘The Magic in Teamwork,’ couldn’t be timelier. We’ve all seen the power of teamwork in action as our neighbors recover and rebuild from the fire. We’re looking for candidates who understand that kind of magic: individuals who lift others up, collaborate, and bring heart to every team they’re part of,” Carlson said.

The 2026 Rose Court is announced September 29, followed by the Rose Queen coronation on October 28 and the 137th Rose Parade on January 1.
