What’s Open and Closed Today in Pasadena and Altadena for Lincoln’s Birthday

Thursday is a state — not federal — holiday

Today is Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday, a California state holiday marking the 217th anniversary of the birth of the nation’s 16th president. While Lincoln’s Birthday is not a federal holiday, it is recognized by the State of California, and many state, county and city offices are closed for the day.

Here is a comprehensive guide to what’s open and closed in Pasadena and Altadena.

City of Pasadena — Government Offices

Pasadena City Hall is closed today and will reopen Friday, Feb. 13.

The City Service Center (CSC) is closed and will reopen Friday, Feb. 13, at 8 a.m.

The Municipal Services Payment Center and the Parking Office are closed today.

The Permit Center is closed for in-person services; however, many services remain available via Permit Center Online, where residents can obtain subtrade permits and submit plans for new construction, tenant improvements, accessory dwelling units and additions. In-person operations resume Friday, Feb. 13.

The Housing Department is closed today and will resume normal operations on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

The Pasadena Public Health Department is closed today. Upcoming vaccine clinics are scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 18, and Monday, Feb. 23. The department reminds residents to take measures to protect themselves from respiratory viruses, including masking indoors, getting vaccinated and staying home when sick.

Pasadena Water and Power offices and the Customer Service Call Center are closed today. However, customers can access their accounts and make payments through the automated phone system at (626) 744-4005 or online at PWPWeb.com.

Schools and Higher Education

Pasadena Unified School District observed Lincoln’s Birthday on Monday, Feb. 9. Schools are in regular session today, Thursday, Feb. 12. Schools will be closed again on Monday, Feb. 16, for Presidents Day.

Pasadena Unified School District has a Special Board of Education Meeting scheduled for today at 4 p.m.

Pasadena City College: Today is the last day of the Winter Intersession. The campus will be closed Friday, Feb. 13, through Monday, Feb. 16, for Presidents’ Day. The spring semester begins Wednesday, Feb. 18.

City Council

City Council will not meet on Monday, Feb. 16. The next council meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23.

Emergency Services

The Pasadena Police Department and the Pasadena Fire Department will continue to provide full patrol, jail, fire, paramedic and other essential emergency services throughout the holiday.

The Pasadena Police Department’s Records Front Counter and Property Section are closed today.

State, Federal and County Government

State of California offices are closed today in observance of Lincoln’s Birthday. California superior courts, including the Los Angeles Superior Court, are closed.

Federal government offices are open. Lincoln’s Birthday is not a federal holiday.

Many Los Angeles County government offices are generally operating on their regular schedules today, so it’s best to check.

Transportation and Parking

Pasadena Transit buses and Dial-A-Ride are operating on their regular schedules today.

Los Angeles Metro buses and trains are operating on regular schedules. Lincoln’s Birthday is not observed by Metro as a service holiday.

Pasadena parking meters are free today and parking time limits will not be enforced. However, violations will still be issued for overnight parking restrictions, red curb parking, “No Parking” zones and blocking fire hydrants. Parking meter enforcement resumes Friday, Feb. 13.

Mail and Package Delivery

Because Lincoln’s Birthday is not a federal holiday, mail and package delivery services are operating normally today.

U.S. Postal Service: Post offices are open and mail will be delivered on its regular schedule.

UPS: Regular pickup and delivery services are operating today.

FedEx: Regular services are operating today.

Banks and Financial Markets

Lincoln’s Birthday is not a federal holiday, so financial institutions are operating normally today.

Banks — including Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Chase — are open on their regular schedules. ATMs and online banking are available as usual.

Stock markets — The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ are open today on their regular schedules. Bond markets are also open. (Note: Markets will be closed Monday, Feb. 16, for Presidents Day/Washington’s Birthday, which is a federal holiday.)

Libraries

All Pasadena Public Library branches are closed today, Thursday, Feb. 12. Libraries will reopen Friday, Feb. 13. Library branches will also be closed Sunday, Feb. 15, and will reopen Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Parks and Recreation

All Pasadena city parks are open today for picnics, fun and play. However, no site reservations are being accepted for the holiday.

Community and recreation centers are closed to the public today, Thursday, Feb. 12.

Trash and Recycling

Trash, recycling and yard waste collection will occur as scheduled today. There is no delay in pickup for residents.

Retail, Grocery and Pharmacy

Lincoln’s Birthday does not affect most private business operations. Major grocery stores, pharmacies and retailers in Pasadena and Altadena are expected to be open on their regular schedules today, including Vons, Ralphs, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Target, CVS and Walgreens. Shoppers should check with individual locations for specific hours.

Most restaurants in Old Pasadena, South Lake Avenue and throughout the community are expected to be open today, some with regular hours and others with modified schedules.

Looking Ahead: Presidents Day — Monday, Feb. 16

Pasadena residents should be aware that Presidents Day (officially Washington’s Birthday) falls on Monday, Feb. 16 — a federal holiday. On that day, many additional closures will take effect, including the U.S. Postal Service, banks, stock markets and federal offices, in addition to City of Pasadena offices, Pasadena Public Library branches and community and recreation centers.
