Caltech baseball faced a tough test on the road Friday afternoon, falling to No. 5 La Verne despite some explosive performances at the plate.
First-year Quinn Hartman (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Marina) opened the game with a leadoff double down the left field line, his first extra-base hit as a Beaver. In the next at-bat, Senior Jack Fishel (Baltimore, Md. Boys’ Latin School of Maryland) roped a triple to right centerfield, driving in Hartman for the opening run of the game. The blast was his second three-base knock of the year, giving him the team lead in that category to go along with his five doubles.
Batting fourth, sophomore Jack Bernhardt (Littleton, Colo.) connected for a one-out RBI single to left, bringing home Fishel for the Beavers’ second run.
Sophomore Keilen Hargenrader (Bethesda, Md. / The Maret School) also doubled in the top of the second inning, rounding out the extra base hits for the Beavers against La Verne.
Bernhardt came home in the sixth for Caltech’s third run, drawing a walk at the plate, advancing on subsequent groundouts and then racing home on a wild pitch.
The two teams will face each other again on Orange Out Saturday at Caltech North Field, April 5 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
